Character and Self-Interest

Character is not about either/or. Don't do this. Do that. Neither is about strict obedience to a written code or unbounded tolerance. Context and the needs of the community and the individual shape how good character expresses itself. Self-interest works against character and is unfortunately unrewarded when it conflicts with other's interests.
