The issue of character is not only one of scandal, but of realism and covering. We need to make sure that when we talk about character we talk about the struggle it takes to support it, that it may grow and change. Character may or may not be fixed, but the resulting actions are always in line with an ideal character held by the person upheld moral strength or weakness. Since love covers and keeps matters private as much as possible, the fact that we eat up private issues points to a general lack of love and concern for the repair of the person's character.
